The exhibit will be coupled with an artist reception in memory of Routh for her family, friends, community, and fans of her art when it opens Friday, March 4, 2016, at 5:30pm.

To prepare for the celebration, the Creative Arts Guild is reaching out to the community, asking owners of any and all works created by Routh to consider loaning those items for inclusion in a special retrospective gallery exhibit. If you have one or more pieces of Routh’s art in a private collection, or know someone who does, we would love to include as many as possible in this exhibit and keep them on loan through the month of March.

We would be honored to include your piece(s) of Routh Cline’s work in our exhibitand will cherish the item(s) with loving respect. If you would like to participate or would like more information, please contact Leanne Lawson, 706.217.6677. Student Arts Expo

  • Date: April 15, 2016
  • Time: All Day Event

The Creative Arts Guild proudly announces the unveiling of the 53rd Annual Student Arts Expo on Friday, April 15th. All students pre-K through 12th grade in Dalton, Murray and Whitfield County Schools plus private and homeschool students have been invited to exhibit their art. Ribbons for first, second, and third place and honorable mention will be awarded in each grade level. Awards are made based on craftsmanship, composition and design, creative expression and execution, and visual impact.

In addition, the Creative Arts Guild and the O.N. Jonas Foundation sponsor an arts competition for collaborative classroom projects. The winning classroom in each division will receive a cash prize to be used for artist-in-residence fees, art supplies or other classroom art activity resources during the school year.

Each year, one high school senior is selected to receive the coveted Bernice Spigel Award in Visual Arts, which includes a cash prize and an opportunity to present an exhibition in the Guild’s Gallery 111. This year's applicants went through a primary panel selection process and five students were selected to continue with a secondary interview process. All of the finalists presented very strong portfolios, artist statements and interviews which led to the decision to award an additional Spigel prize this year.

The exhibit by this year's Bernice Spigel Award in the Visual Arts recipients, Zachary Edds of Northwest High School and Ariana Magana of Dalton High School, will open with a reception at Student Arts Expo on April 15 in Gallery 111 at the Creative Arts Guild.

The Student Arts Expo gallery opening and artist reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. on April 15. The event is free and open to the public. Call the Guild for more information or to schedule a field trip for groups of students (or others) at (706) 217-6677.

First Friday Gallery Opening

  • Date: August 5, 2016
  • Time: 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
  • Location: 520 W Waugh Street Dalton, GA

The Creative Arts Guild will host its August “First Friday” gallery-opening and reception on Friday, August 5th, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, at its location at 520 W. Waugh Street and is proud to announce 3 wonderful art exhibits to view plus a chance to meet and visit with the artists themselves.

New this month, is a striking display in Gallery 111: “From My Perspective”. In an effort to inspire creativity in young minds, a local advertising and design firm, h2b creative, hosted a photography project for local youth served by the City of Refuge, a Dalton non-profit organization that provides assistance to local families in need. All photographs will be available for sale in silent auction and proceeds donated to the City of Refuge. By sharing their perspectives through art, these children are empowered, learning they can make a difference in the world. h2b creative takes pride in its effort to "listen carefully, draw upon the imagination, and develop new ways to connect to the world around us". Come see how their project has helped these talented children connect to their world and the arts!

Another new exhibit, titled “Ghost Paths” is located in the Jonas Performance Hall. This is an extraordinary display of photographs documenting the Trail of Tears, the forcible removal of tens of thousands of American Indians from their sacred ancestral homelands in the South-eastern United States. The Trail follows the arduous march from Georgia and other adjacent states to reservations west of the Mississippi River. The march was one of death and despair with massive loss of life along the way. Several years ago a talented British photographer, Elizabeth Waight, came to the United States to document the Trail of Tears with photos and poetry.

Ms. Waight’s explanation of her work: “While very little physical trace remains of this journey, which totalled thousands of miles and resulted in the loss of around four thousand lives, echoes of the past do remain. Through retracing the footsteps of those forced along the Trail I aim to show that memory is not secretive; it can be shared”. The Georgia Chapter Trail of Tears Association helped her with her project of mounting many of the images on large panels. The photos have been exhibited at the McRitchie-Hollis Museum in Newnan, GA, the Funk Heritage Center in Waleska and the Chieftains Museum in Rome.

Continuing on display in our Main Gallery is an ongoing exhibit by members of the Regional Arts Alliance. The Regional Arts Alliance was founded in 1980 and has over thirty active members, skilled in a variety of mediums, who meet monthly for peer support and continuing education. The Alliance hosts a half-dozen exhibitions each year for members to show and sell their work.

The public is invited; there is no charge. Light refreshments will be available; donations welcome. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring young family members to view all of these unique exhibits. Find out more about both of these unique exhibits at www.creativeartsguild.org and visit us on Facebook.

Ballroom Dancing for Teens & Adults

Ages 18 & up

Join us for an afternoon of fun and movement learning to social dance. We will be learning the East Coast Swing, Foxtrot and Rumba. It will be an afternoon full of fun and movement. Because we will be having so much fun you won’t even realize you are getting exercise, too.

Linda Hong has been teaching ballroom dance for over 20 years having been certified by both Arthur Murray and DVIDA. You may have seen her if you have been to “Dancing with the Stars” in Dalton or North Georgia or even “Dare to Dance” in Chattanooga. She has had a lot of fun participating in these fundraisers and working with her celebrities. She has worked at Arthur Murray Dance Studio’s in Chattanooga and Atlanta, at various independent studios, as well as, as her own studio “The Dance Floor”; which she opened with her daughter, Tammy Wilson. Linda has a passion for bringing social dance to both young and old individuals and loves seeing the transformation that takes place when confidence and poise are gained. She believes the hardest step is the one that takes you through the door, not the one on the dance floor.

Come join her in September for a fabulous master class!

Dancers should wear comfortable clothes that can be danced in and soft-soled shoes. (No tennis shoes.) A partner is not required for this class.

Creative Arts Guild will welcome “Voices Night Out”, on Friday, October 14th, (time to be determined)

The group was formed in 2011, when a group of local classically trained singers combined to form Voices Night Out. Its function is to educate music lovers to the beauty of the trained voice, something that most tend to never listen to. This year, they thought it would be fun to present a Halloween themed program with music from Broadway shows and opera. Characters in the likes of ghosts or monsters or murderers brought to life in music ranging from fun patter to large and boisterous to the difficult "don't try this at home" variety. They have excerpts from shows such as Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Secret Garden, and A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder. Arias from operas such as Die Zauberflöte, Lucia di Lammermoor, and Faust. Just to name a few.

Performing will be: Lisa Gregg, soprano, Jennifer Phinney, soprano, Chrissy Baker, soprano, Keith Rollins, tenor, Jared Hawkins, tenor, and Ted Long, baritone.

Guild Music Director Lisa Elders, says, “This group has performed at the Guild at least twice. This is a tremendous amount of talent, and those attending are in for a treat.” For more information, contact Lisa at 706-259-1822 or email lisae@creativeartsguild.org.

The 11th Annual production of The Snow Queen
based on the fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen

Act I

Scene I: Opening: We are introduced to the four royal sisters, Spring Princess (a kind but lonely woman); Summer Princess (playful but selfish); Fall Princess (a wild gypsy) and the Snow Queen (beautiful but cold and conniving). Here, we take a look back to when the Queen of the Sprites and her little Sprites made a magic mirror that controls the seasons of the four sisters. Snow decides that she wants to possess the mirror alone and steals it with the Sprite's help. When stolen, the mirror shatters into a million pieces and one shard lands in the eye of a village girl, Kay. Snow Queen begins her search to find Kay and get the shard back.

Scene II: The Village: It’s dawn in the marketplace. The townspeople enter as the sun is rising and greet one another as they begin to sell their wares. Here we are introduced to the Village Adults, Children, Mazurka Girls and close, loving Sisters, Kay and Gerda. All villagers are dancing joyously on a lovely day. As the time to head to school and work comes, the village girl Kay is gifted a beautiful hand embroidered handkerchief by the village’s Seamstress. Kay shows her beautiful gift to her sister. We are then left only with Kay and Gerda who are frozen by the Snow Queen when she enters to kidnap and take Kay back to her snowy castle to retrieve the final missing shard of glass. During the kidnapping, Kay leaves behind her handkerchief and heads through the seasons to winter under the Snow Queen’s spell. The Queen of the Sprites enters the village, awakens Gerda, shows her the handkerchief and begins the journey through the 4 seasons to find her sister in Winter and take her home.

Act II

Scene I: The journey through Spring…we are introduced to the Spring Princess , a kind but lonely woman who welcomes Gerda with open arms and wishes more than anything that she will stay. Knowing that Gerda needs rest, Spring Princess tells Gerda to sleep, hoping that she will forget her journey. However, the whispering roses wake Gerda up and remind her to think of her sister and continue on to the next season.

Scene II: The journey through Summer…here we are introduced to the lovely but arrogant Summer Princess who dances merrily to a very impressed Gerda. But once she realizes the Princess’ intentions for her – to make her a servant – she escapes from Summer’s palace and continues on to Fall. Summer sends her Pages after her but to no avail. Gerda is already gone.

Scene III: The journey through Fall…Gerda is scared and tired now as her journey has been long. She sneaks into Fall and bumps into the Fall Princess who is a wild and fearsome gypsy. Fall Princess’ daughter, Robber Girl, enters and begs her mother to give her Gerda as a plaything because she has no friends her own age. The Princess finally agrees. In time, Gerda realizes that she must leave because her sister is the most important thing to her. Gerda tricks the Robber Girl into letting her go and her mother, the Fall Princess, reveals her disappointment with her child.

Scene IV: The journey into Winter…Gerda, again with the help of the Queen of the Sprites, finds her sister Kay with the Snow Queen. Icicles, Frost and Snow Storms dance around them trying to keep them under the control of the Snow Queen. Eventually, the other royal sisters…Spring, Summer and Fall, along with the Queen of the Sprites…come to the rescue and help Gerda and Kay escape. Kay puts the final shard of glass back in the mirror and returns the mirror to the Queen of the Sprites to be taken away for good. Kay and Gerda rejoice in their reunion!

Start your New Year off right by joining the Creative Arts Guild for January's First Friday on January 13th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm for light refreshments and the much anticipated opening reception for The Art Of The Cinema. This exhibit, curated by local filmmaker Mark Hannah and Creative Arts Guild Gallery Director Savannah Thomas, features the never-before-seen private collections of four Daltonians and celebrates over 100 years of Hollywood with a special collection of artwork, vintage movie posters and advertisements, and cultural icons. This exhibit will be focused on animated and adventure movies for the month of January. Stick around after the opening for a special screening at 7:30 of A Decade Under The Influence, a 70 minute documentary about the first batch of Creative Art Guild Young Filmmakers back in the 1970’s.

In addition to The Art Of The Cinema, we’ll also feature for the first time work by Calhoun artist, Johnathan Elakman, in Gallery III. Natural Curiosities is Elakman’s response to the unknown and the spark of imagination it creates in us all when just enough is left unsaid for our mind to begin to fill in the blank. Elakman recently graduated from Tenneessee Tech’s Appalachian Center for Craft with a BFA in Glass Studio.

Finally, returning to have an exhibit in our Jonas Performance Hall will be Dalton favorite Jody Harris, with his exhibit Cartoonery. In Harris’ signature style he combines his street art background with nostalgic icons from our past to create a body of work that is both humorous and engaging.

Through the Lens of War: One Marine's Odyssey in World War II

  • Date: February 3, 2017
  • Time: All Day Event
  • Location: 520 W Waugh Street, Dalton, Ga 30720

On Friday, February 4, 2017 the Bandy Heritage Center for Northwest Georgia in partnership with the Creative Arts Guild will present Through the Lens of War: One Marine’s Odyssey in World War II. This photographic exhibit chronicles the experience of Lieutenant Andrew Waskey during the battle of Iwo Jima and post-war occupation duty in Japan. Andrew Waskey, father of Dalton State College Professor of Social Sciences, Jack Waskey, Ph.D., served in the 13th Regiment, the artillery arm of the Fifth Marine Division, during the battle that produced some of the fiercest fighting of the Pacific campaign of the Second World War. Artillery support provided by the 13th Regiment’s 75mm and 105mm howitzers was a crucial factor in the neutralization of Japanese forces entrenched on the slopes of Mount Suribachi and the elimination of Japanese resistance in the hills, ridges, and caves at Iwo’s northern end. After the Japanese surrender, Lieutenant Waskey and the 13th Regiment were assigned to occupation duty at the port city of Sasebo on the Japanese island of Kyushu.

This collection of never-before published photographs provides a graphic view of the battle’s aftermath and the destruction wrought during the month-long struggle for control of this crucial Pacific outpost. Viewers will also gain a candid look into the lives of American servicemen and Japanese civilians as these two former antagonists tried to work together to rebuild a land shattered by war.

Through the Lens of War is presented as part of the Creative Arts Guild’s monthly “First Friday” community arts program. The exhibit will remain on display at the Creative Arts Guild through February 24, 2017.

The Bandy Heritage Center for Northwest Georgia, a community outreach program of Dalton State College, was established in 2008 through the generosity of Dalton native and entrepreneur Jack Bandy and named for his parents, B.J. and Dicksie Bandy, community leaders who possessed an abiding respect for the area’s history and a dedication to preserving that history for future generations. The Center’s mission is to celebrate and preserve the region’s historical heritage and culture. This mission is achieved through collaboration with partnering historical and cultural organizations throughout the area, enabling the Center to fulfill its role as the primary source for information related to the region’s historic resources.

An Introduction to the Alexander Technique

  • Date: March 31, 2017
  • Time: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
  • Location: Creative Arts Guild, 520 W. Waugh Street, Main Gallery

The Creative Arts Guild and Dalton State will present an introductory session on the Alexander Technique on Friday, March 31st, 10am-12pm, led by Dr. Lillian Pearson, a visiting artist from North Carolina.

The class is open to the public, and admission is $10 ($5 for any student). All are welcome!

The class will be held at the Creative Arts Guild's main facility at 520 West Waugh Street in the Main Gallery.

Bring a yoga mat if you have one, or a towel. We’re likely to be sitting or lying on the floor for some portion of the class. We will have a few yoga mats to share.

You may know that Alexander is widely studied by musicians and actors to improve their performance.

Here is more information from the American Society for the Alexander Technique

What is the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique is an educational method used worldwide for well over 100 years. By teaching how to change faulty postural habits, it enables improved mobility, posture, performance and alertness along with relief of chronic stiffness, tension and stress.

Why do people study the Alexander Technique?

People study the Technique for a variety of reasons. The most common is to relieve pain through learning better coordination of the musculoskeletal system.

Another reason people take lessons in the Alexander Technique is to enhance performance. Athletes, singers, dancers, and musicians use the Technique to improve breathing, vocal production, and speed and accuracy of movement.

The most far-reaching reason people study the Technique is to achieve greater conscious control of their reactions.

Most of us have many habitual patterns of tension, learned both consciously and unconsciously. These patterns can be unlearned, enabling the possibility of new choices in posture, movement and reaction. During lessons you'll develop awareness of habits that interfere with your natural coordination.  You'll learn how to undo these patterns and develop the ability to consciously redirect your whole self into an optimal state of being and functioning. Through direct experience you’ll learn how to go about your daily activities with increasingly greater ease and less effort.

Pianist, Lillian Buss Pearson, has appeared throughout the continental United States, England, Costa Rica and China as a soloist and collaborative artist. She is also certified as a teacher of the Alexander Technique.  Dr. Pearson holds degrees from Florida State University and the University of Illinois, her principal teacher being the Hungarian trained pianist Edward Kilenyi. Her interest in historically informed performance practice has led her also to study harpsichord and fortepiano.

Lillian is the official pianist at the International Flute Festival in Costa Rica where she has performed the past five years. In October, 2008 she appeared in Weill Recital Hall, NYC, in a concert of four international flutists. On numerous occasions she has had opportunity to collaborate with internationally known artists. Pearson’s solo orchestral appearances include performances with the Jacksonville Symphony (FL), the Asheville Symphony (NC), the Breckenridge Festival Orchestra (CO), the Western Carolina Civic Orchestra (NC), the National Chamber Players (NC), and the Brandenburg Ensemble (FL). For many years she was a member of the Breckenridge Music Festival and the Cullowhee Summer Music Festival. She has served as an accompanist for many conferences and workshops.

Dr. Pearson has actively pursued training in Alexander Technique for over 15 years, including a sabbatical leave in 1997 to study in England with Nelly Ben-Or, pianist and teacher of the Alexander Technique and member of the faculty at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.  Lillian is now certified as a teacher of the Alexander Technique. She is especially interested in the integration of Alexander Technique with musical performance.

F.M. Alexander, was an actor who lived in the late 1800s, who suffered from voice loss. Mr. Alexander was enjoying a fruitful career as a performer until encountering chronic vocal problems, including frequent loss of voice. He sought medical as well as educational help, but to no avail. The best advice recommended to him was vocal rest for two weeks. However even after not speaking for the duration of time, when he went to perform he lost his voice again. We can imagine how frustrating this must have been.

Alexander decided to find a solution on his own. He set up mirrors to observe himself speaking. After a long and patient process, he noticed that whenever he went to speak he would pull his head back and down on his spine, putting unnecessary strain on his larynx. This habit was clearly at the root of his problem.

He was then faced with the dilemma of how to break such a deeply intrenched habit. In the years that followed he devoted himself to this question, and the Alexander Technique is the result of that process. It has been used for the last hundred years to help thousands of people to un-do habits of a lifetime and return to health, wellness and ease of motion.

The Creative Arts Guild’s Gymnastics Program presents its Annual Spring EXPO to display the skills and progress of the program’s many talented students.  Three scheduled sessions will be featuring all students in the Recreational and Competitive Team programs - about 165 kids ranging from 18 months to 16 years old.  The routines are true performance numbers accompanied by music and the participants will be wearing colorful leotards as they work their sets.  This is a chance for students to show off their skills and routines that they have learned and practiced all year and which show the progression of individual and team skill difficulty levels.

Tumbling Levels 2 & 3, ages 5 and up, will present their exhibition on Friday evening, May 19th, 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm.  Preschoolers, 2 and 3 year-olds, perform on Saturday morning from 9:00 am – 10:30 am; and Level 1 students, ages 5 and up, will showcase their skills from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm the same day.  All three sessions will be held at the Guild Dance, Gymnastics and Cheer Center, 2518 Cleveland Hwy (beside Tractor Supply), in Dalton.

This is a great opportunity to observe three terrific gymnastics demonstrations that you and your friends and family can enjoy; and, an opportunity for interested kids to see what fun tumbling and gymnastics classes can be. The charge is $2.00 but kids under 3 get in free! Why not stop in during one of these sessions and watch these kids in action.  And, maybe sign a child or teen up for one of our summer classes or camps.

The Guild Gymnastics Team does performances at many special events both in the community and at our facilities each year. You can catch them at local favorites such as Ballyhoo, Creative Arts Guild's FESTIVAL, and the annual Dalton Christmas Pbesideesides our annual Guild Gymnastics Expo. Check back often with information about any upcoming performances!

Please contact Amanda Walker, (706) 259-0093, or amandaw@creativeartsguild.org for additional information about EXPO or our summer class schedule.

July Gallery Opening & Artist Reception

  • Date: July 7, 2017
  • Time: 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
  • Location: 520 W Waugh Street Dalton, GA

“The Creative Arts Guild is thrilled to continue our strong summer line-up of artists from throughout the region with this month’s gallery opening” says Ms. Thomas. “Both Russell Cook and Hollie Berry are experimenting with art in new and challenging ways, and we feel that this month’s opening will be an exciting one for all audiences.”

On Friday July 7th, 5:30pm to 7:30pm, the Creative Arts Guild will present its First Friday Gallery Opening and Artists’ Reception, featuring two new exhibits, a chance to meet the artists, and light refreshments. Then at 7:30pm AmeriCalypso Band will provide a mix of Caribbean-flavored music on the Spigel Pavilion. The Guild's First Friday series is always free and open to the public and offers exciting opportunities for all ages to experience new and inspiring works of art.

This month’s gallery opening will feature two new artists: Russell Cook with his work Disarrangement of Form and Hollie Berry’s fire painting series Playing with Fire in our Main Gallery and Gallery 111, respectively. Also, the ongoing exhibit by Chattanooga-based illustrator Nicole Song of her environmental-focused series Over The River and Through the Woods, will continue on display in our ON Jonas Performance Hall. Nicole describes the exhibit as a “… body of work that explores the whimsy and wonderful design of our local ecosystem.”

Russell Cook is a multi-disciplinary artist from north Georgia, who combines his broad ranging skills as a painter, a carpenter, a writer, a musician, and a sculptor. His work includes drawing and painting, collage, sculpture, kinetic art, musical composition and performance, art criticism, and collaborations in film and theater.

Hollie Berry recounts: “I started drawing as soon as I could grip a pencil and was painting in oils by the age of nine.” She continued studying art through college, graduating in 2009 with a BFA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin. A few years after graduation Berry moved to Chattanooga, TN and found a fresh artistic start, first with monumental land art drawings at Coolidge Park, and then with more permanent public art in the form of murals. Her current work is with a technique called “Fire Painting”. Not sure what that is? No problem…Ms. Berry will be demonstrating her unique art form during the reception.

Ms. Thomas says “The Creative Arts Guild’s First Friday series is the perfect date night, family outing, or girl’s (or guy’s!) night out. Grab a drink and hors d’oeuvre while viewing the rotating exhibits at the Creative Arts Guild and meeting new artists from our area! Then stay and enjoy AmeriCalypso! We hope our community will continue to come out to support and engage with each of our new artists and their work.”

The Guild is located at 520 W. Waugh St. in Dalton. Questions about the exhibits or the reception? Contact Savannah Thomas, Gallery Director at Savannaht@creativeartsguild.org or 706-279-3129.

55 Minutes, Recommended for Grades 3-8

To young Lemuel, who has escaped slavery in Georgia, life in Gettysburg is everything he had dreamed it would be. His ideas about the North and the South, as well as what it means to be a free man, are challenged, however, when he unexpectedly befriends Jacob, a young Confederate soldier. The two men may be of different races and on different sides of the Civil War, but they have much to teach each other about bravery and loyalty in ArtsPower’s exciting and suspenseful musical.
