Guild honors Bernice Spigel PDF Print E-mail

Guild honors Bernice Spigel with exhibit

The Creative Arts Guild will host an exhibit of the works by and the collection of Bernice Spigel, the Guild’s first paid director and longtime art patron, scheduled to open Monday, April 19th. The exhibit represents more than five decades of collecting and creating art. An opening reception will be held on May 7th (First Friday) in the Guild’s main gallery on Waugh Street in Dalton.

The exhibit featur2009_Patron_of_the_Year_-_Bernice_Spigel_048_3es eighty-five art works of which thirty are original works by Ms. Spigel. Included in the show are pieces by Winslow Crannell, Bjorn Wiinblad, George Cress, Roderick Slater, Jacob Jones and Anton Weiss. Guild Director Terry Tomasello states, “As we began to assemble the show we were pleasantly surprised by the eclectic nature. There is everything from paintings to etchings to collage work in the exhibit. One can’t help but enjoy the show whether they personally knew Bernice or not. It is a wonderful tribute to her and we are honored to house the exhibit.”

With this exhibit, which spans decades, patrons will see works that reflect Ms. Spigel’s years in New York and Chicago where she worked in advertising,  works purchased and gifted to her through her long association with the Creative Arts Guild and collected art from years of traveling the globe. Guild Gallery Director Bradley Wilson says, “It’s clear that Bernice appreciated a variety of art forms and media. This collection is culturally and stylistically diverse as well as rich in subject matter.”

After her death in December 2009, Ms. Spigel’s son Jon approached Ms. Tomasello with advice on what to do with so much art work. Together they came up with the idea of the exhibit. Mr. Spigel shared that he is thrilled and excited to see his mother’s work at the Guild and is looking forward to sharing an evening with patrons and friends in celebration of her life in the arts and in Dalton. States Mr. Spigel, “This is like coming home. I grew up at the Guild and am so grateful to see my mother’s collection and art in a place she loved so dearly.”

The works and collection of Bernice Spigel opens on Monday, April 19th at 9:00 a.m. and closes on May 21st at 4:00 p.m. An opening reception provided by the Guild and Mr. and Mrs. Jon Spigel will be held on Friday May 7th beginning at 5:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
