Student Arts Expo Opens Friday, March 1!

The Creative Arts Guild proudly announces the opening of the Annual Student Arts Expo on Friday, March 1st, at its facility at 520 West Waugh Street in Dalton. March is Arts in Education Month at the Guild and the Student Arts Expo is a big part of the celebration and the main feature of the March Gallery Opening and Artist Reception. The event, 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm, is free and open to the public. There will be light refreshments plus student dance performances throughout the evening.

Each February, a senior from Whitfield, Dalton, or Murray County is chosen to receive the Spigel Prize, which includes a cash prize and an opportunity to present an exhibition in the Creative Arts Guild’s Gallery One11. The late Bernice Spigel, the namesake of the coveted award and the first Executive Director of the Creative Arts Guild, was one of a group of local artists and visionaries whose remarkable foresight and initiative led to the founding of the Guild 56 years ago! This year the prize was awarded to two students both of whose work exemplified the elements and quality prescribed by the judges. Diana Almazan, a senior at Coahulla Creek High School and William Harvey, a senior at South East High School are this year’s recipients!

What is the Student Arts Expo?

Each year, all Whitfield/Dalton and Murray County public, private and homeschool students ages Pre-K to High School are invited to exhibit individual art. All forms of two-dimensional and three-dimensional art are accepted. Also, school classrooms are encouraged to submit collaborative work in the "Art Together" project. Prizes for best work are awarded on Friday before the exhibit officially opens that evening. The winning collaborative project in each grade level will receive a $100 cash award to be used for an artist-in-residence fee, art supplies, or other classroom art resources during the school year.

Elementary and Middle Schools will exhibit in Jonas Hall; High School students’ work will be shown in Gallery FIVE20; and the 2019 Spigel Prize winners will be exhibiting in Gallery One11. Student Arts Expo 2019 will be on display March 1st through March 22nd allowing time for families, friends, and the general public to see the exhibits. The galleries are open to the public Monday thru Thursday 10:00 am – 6:00 pm; Friday 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, and Saturday 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. Please plan to visit the Guild to see the phenomenal student work and to support our future artists! You may call to schedule field trips: 706-278-0168.
