Support for “Arts in Education”

March is Arts in Education month at the Creative Arts Guild and one of the most anticipated celebrations of Arts in Education is our annual Spring for the Arts luncheon. On March 21st we will host our 16th annual fashion show, luncheon and fashion art market at The Farm in support of all of our Arts in Education programming and most especially, our 50 years of partnership between the Creative Arts Guild and the O.N. Jonas Foundation.

The Guild’s Arts in Education programs consist of our internal educational classes and workshops in dance, visual arts, music, and gymnastics; field trip offerings; arts scholarships; our annual Student Arts Expo; and our newest Arts in Education venture – Creative Connections – our annual professional development conference for all our area school arts educators in all arts disciplines.

Our coveted partnership with the O.N. Jonas Foundation provides Artists in Residence opportunities for our area students - striving to ensure that every child in our community has the opportunity to participate in the arts. The partnership is committed to broadening student arts exposure and education in grades pre-K through 12 in Dalton Public, Whitfield County and Murray County Schools, as well as the Elbert Shaw Regional Detention Center, Crossroads Academy, Mountain Creek Academy and Northstar School. In 2018, these arts education programs created nearly 40,000 arts experiences for the students enrolled in these schools.

Arts education and exposure have numerous benefits including improved academic performance, cultural awareness, inventiveness, social and emotional development and civic engagement. It also promotes self-directed learning, improves school attendance and sharpens critical and creative skills. The Guild’s Arts in Education programs strive to ensure that all of our community’s children are engaged in the arts and are granted the benefits of art experiences regardless of their socioeconomic background.

With your help, we will continue the tradition of connecting students to the arts. Please join us for this year’s fundraiser, Spring for the Arts 2019: Art Meets Fashion.  Should you have any questions, please contact us. We cherish the support of our sponsors and we value and appreciate your investment in Arts in Education.

The Creative Arts Guild Launches “Creative Connections”Cherokee Ellison leads a workshop on the movement form

On October 30, 2017, with the support of Arts in Education funding, the Guild hosted its first annual arts educators' conference – “Creative Connections” – designed for area arts educators in all arts disciplines. The conference was born from CAG’s interest in supporting working artists including arts educators. A group of art educators from our three area school systems – Dalton Public Schools, Whitfield County Schools and Murray County Schools – gathered to explore how CAG could better support them. From that discussion came the idea for the conference and its unique workshops. The Guild then worked closely with a team of administrators and arts educators from the school systems acting as an advisory panel during the development of the conference. Jessica Booth, the Fine Arts Program Specialist for the Georgia Department of Education served as the keynote speaker. 100 teachers attended, and CAG received tremendous feedback. One teacher said that in 30 years of teaching, Creative Connections was the “best professional development he had ever received”. Many other teachers commented and sent thank you letters to their periodicals and to CAG.

Why “Arts in Education”?

Research has shown that arts education and exposure to all fine arts has numerous benefits including improved academic achievement, cultural awareness, inventiveness, social and emotional development, and civic engagement. It also promotes self-directed learning, improves school attendance and sharpens critical and creative skills. Through the arts, students learn to design, collaborate, problem-solve and express themselves effectively – skills which translate well into a strong foundation for business and commerce. The Guild’s Arts in Education programs strive to ensure that all of our community’s children are engaged in the arts and are granted the benefits of art experiences regardless of their socioeconomic background.
